[Spoilers] Rebirth of the Overlord

Well, Cardfight 159 aired last night! And uh...  if this isn't straight up legacy support, then I don't know what is..

Now we've known that Dragonic Overlord was getting a Reverse Cross Ride for a while, which was going to be Dragonic Overlord "The Re-birth", which was basically going to mimic Dragonic Overlord the End for the modern day game. There was much anticipation over what the unit was going to do, and when the new episode rolled around we were pretty surprised. Not at The Re-birth, but at the fact that Dragonic Overlord was straight up errata'd.

In the episode, Dragonic Overlord was used as a Break Ride, giving the unit it rode over a free Eternal Flame, where if it hit a rear-guard unit, it would stand itself. It wouldn't even take away twin drive either, so if you landed a hit on a rear-guard you knew you were going to get far ahead in advantage. Now this is all fine, but the more concerning factor is if Bushiroad is going to print two cards with the same name but different skills. They've technically already done this before, because they printed a version of Blaster Blade that had alternate art but no skill. If you used that version of Blaster Blade, you wouldn't be able to use the retiring skill for that specific card. So it seems feasible enough that they will do the same with the new Dragonic Overlord.

Now let's look at The Re-birth. From what we can gather from the anime, its Limit Break comes with a hefty cost of Locking five of your Kagero. If you do this, The Re-birth gains +10000 power for this turn along with another skill. If it attacks, after the battle you can discard two cards to stand it again. You can obviously use the skill only once per turn, but it's still what we basically expected: another standing vanguard.

So basically, the resultant of using these two cards together is to hope that your opponent cannot two 33000 power swings. If they don't, you'll probably end up attacking three or four times with The Re-birth, netting you six to eight drive checks. You'll also essentially clear your opponent's front row and maybe inflict one or two damage to your opponent. To be completely honest, I'm unsure on how to gauge this unit's power yet. It feels like it's really easy to stop the two attacks, especially with Sentinels, but they don't, you accelerate way past them.

In addition to this factor, you also have to consider that Link Joker basically screw you over more than any Reverse deck. Locking five units is just setting Star-vader, Chaos Breaker Dragon up for a feast. Your field could also get caught in an Omega Lock from Star-vader, "Omega" Glendios. Obviously this isn't very safe versus those decks, but against others there are not that many direct counters.

Now, do these cards create any synergies with other Kagero units? If the cards are based off of what we got from the anime, I'd say that The Re-birth might actually work better with Dauntless Drive Dragon than the new Dragonic Overlord. While using The End with Dauntless was strong enough, it still partially relied on The End's on hit ability to get all three of the attacks through. Now from what we can gather from The Re-birth, it doesn't have to hit to stand itself, you just need to pay the extremely hefty cost. Logically speaking, it should be better to mix Dauntless with The Re-birth, because on the Break Ride turn you're assured three 31000+ attacks with twin drive. I don't think that many other units could synergize well with the new Dragonic Overlord however. The new Dragonic Overlord can be shut down pretty easily, and it's the two guaranteed attacks from The Re-birth that make it shine.

These are my thoughts on the new Kagero this far. Obviously these cards could be drastically different from what we interpreted them to be, so stay tuned for any updates on official texts. What do you think about the new Kagero? Feel free to leave your opinions in the comments below, and thanks for reading.
